Typhoon Fung Wong is already bringing "life threatening conditions" to one eastern island, with widespread disruption expected later.

A second typhoon in a week is churning toward the Philippines, with tens of thousands of residents warned to flee the looming destructive winds and life-threatening storm surges.

Filipinos are bracing for the arrival of a new typhoon after one earlier this week left more than 200 people dead.

Typhoon Kalmaegi damaged homes and uprooted trees in central Vietnam late Thursday after cutting a path of destruction through the Philippines, where it killed nearly 200 people.

Typhoon Kalmaegi has killed at least 188 people in the Philippines and five in Vietnam, according to the latest figures from the two countries. The storm is now headed west to Cambodia and Laos after it barrelled through central Vietnam on Thursday with winds of up to 149km/h (92mph).

Typhoon Kalmaegi brought fierce winds and torrential rains to Vietnam on Friday, days after the powerful storm battered the Philippines, where it left scores dead or missing.
