The United States government has revoked its designation of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as a foreign terrorist organization, seven months after the group overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and seized control of Damascus,

President Donald Trump's administration has revoked the foreign terrorist organization designation for Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, according to a State Department memo filed on Monday, a major step as Washington moves to ease sanctions on Syria.

The move comes in conjunction with President Donald Trump’s June order to lift sanctions on Syria to support “the country’s path to stability and peace.”
