Sidney Poitier became the first Black man to win Best Actor at the 36th Academy Awards in 1964 for Lilies of the Field. He remains only the fifth Black man to win the award in Oscar history. Poitier's win came during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. His previous nomination had been for The Defiant Ones in 1959.
