November 19, 1977. A TAP Portugal flight attempts to land in Madeira… Heavy rain. Strong wind. A short, wet runway. On the second attempt, the plane touches down—too fast, too far. It skids off the end, crashes down a ravine, and explodes. 131 people died. It was the deadliest air disaster in Portugal’s history. Only after the crash did they extend the runway.
