A day at sea captured on film with MBARI postdoc @seathescience 🌊☀️ At MBARI, our “office” is Monterey Bay and its deep submarine canyon. For many of our staff, that means spending a lot of time on the water. The R/V Rachel Carson sets sail early in the morning, steaming to research sites in Monterey Bay and beyond. By mid-morning, they’ve deployed remotely operated vehicles, autonomously operated vehicles, or other instruments that MBARI scientists and engineers are using to study our blue bac

Sperm whales are the loudest animals on Earth and rely on sound to find food in the sprawling darkness of the deep sea. MBARI’s hydrophone, or underwater microphone, allows us to listen in, providing valuable insight into the mysterious lives of these ocean giants. This video shows a sperm whale’s echolocation clicks while searching, locating, and capturing its prey. The audio was recorded at MBARI’s cabled underwater observatory, the Monterey Accelerated Research System, at a depth of 891 meter

Wake up, babe. New MBARI species just dropped. 🤩🙌🏽 MBARI researchers have discovered a remarkable new species of sea slug that lives in the deep sea. Bathydevius caudactylus swims through the ocean’s midnight zone and lights up with brilliant bioluminescence. With a voluminous hooded structure at one end, a flat tail fringed with numerous finger-like projections at the other, and colorful internal organs in between, the team initially struggled to place this animal in a group. Because the ani

Robots, cameras, AI, and white sharks? Meet Piscivore. Marine predators such as tunas, sharks, seabirds, and marine mammals play an important role in ocean ecosystems, but these animals remain challenging to study. They spend much of their time far from shore and dispersed across remote stretches of the global ocean. Now, a new camera system developed by MBARI’s engineers gives us a glimpse into the secret lives of these ocean predators. MBARI’s innovative Piscivore system combines advanced robo

New MBARI research reveals the dynamic processes that sculpt the Arctic seafloor. MBARI researchers—working alongside a team of international collaborators from the Korea Polar Research Institute, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory—have discovered large underwater ice formations at the edge of the Canadian Beaufort Sea, located in a remote region of the Arctic. In a previous MBARI study, researchers obs

During ROV dives in the Monterey Bay, MBARI researchers have often observed small crabs riding on the backs or clinging to the bellies of Scotoplanes sea cucumbers, commonly known as sea pigs.⠀ ⠀ Flat, muddy plains cover much of the deep seafloor. In such areas, animals that can’t burrow into the mud have nowhere to hide. Some juvenile king crabs have evolved a unique solution to this problem—they hitch rides on wandering sea cucumbers. You can observe more curious animal behaviors by playing

Meet the newest (and cutest) addition to the snailfish family 🐟 MBARI collaborators @sunygeneseo with scientists from the University of Montana and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, have described three new deep-sea snailfishes, including one first discovered using MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts. Snailfishes make their homes in a variety of ocean habitats—from shallow tide pools to deep-sea trenches. The newly described bumpy snailfish (Careproctus colliculi), observed

Meet MBARI: This team develops innovative new technology to map the seafloor With marine life and ecosystems facing a rising tide of threats, the ocean exploration community needs nimble, cost-effective tools for measuring and monitoring ocean health. MBARI’s Control, Modeling, and Perception of Autonomous Systems Laboratory, known as the CoMPAS Lab is up to the challenge. MBARI scientists and engineers build and adapt advanced technology that enhances ocean data collection. Led by engineer Gian

MBARI has recorded the spectacular giant jellyfish, Stygiomedusa gigantea, eight times with MBARI ROVs, most recently in November 2013, at 1679 m right here in Monterey Canyon near Shepard Meander. We have also sighted specimens during expeditions to the Channel Islands and the Gulf of California. Stygiomedusa gigantea has an enormous red/brown bell that can stretch about a meter (three feet) across and oral arms over three meters (10 feet) long. Four of our earlier observations were included in

It’s everyone’s favorite time of year—the MBARI highlights video is here! Dive in with us for some of the most stunning deep-sea sightings we made in 2025 📽️✨️ This year, our team spotted ultra-black fishes, sinuous siphonophores, curious crabs, spectacular sponges, and so many more dazzling denizens of the deep. These fascinating finds underscore the remarkable diversity of life in the largest living space on Earth. 2025 marked the beginning of several significant chapters in MBARI’s w

A healthy ocean is critical for all life on Earth. But to make predictions about the future of our ocean, scientists need to understand its biological and chemical cycles. That’s where MBARI’s Ocean Biogeochemical Sensing Team comes in. Led by marine chemist Yui Takeshita, this team is developing sensors that detect how climate change alters ocean chemistry. Each year, the ocean absorbs 25 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activities. It has buffered our planet from the worst effect

In 36 years of deep-sea discoveries, MBARI’s remotely operated vehicles have completed more than 7,300 successful dives and recorded approximately 29,000 hours of deep-sea footage. The MBARI Video Lab team is at the heart of this treasure trove of visual data. This video archive includes more than 10 million observations about what we see on video—animals, behaviors, interactions, geological features, marine debris, and more—along with location, depth, and surrounding habitat characteristics. Deep-sea light show brought to you by corals 🎇🪸 In 2020, a team of MBARI researchers filmed bioluminescence from a variety of deep octocorals in their own habitat for the first time. The scientists worked with the pilots of the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts to equip the vehicle with an extremely light-sensitive video camera. Since many animals only glow when disturbed, they filmed the animals while gently touching them with the ROV’s manipulator arm or a soft paintbrush. They

Listening in on Earth’s largest animal 🐋 🎶 With the blue whale’s massive size comes a massive appetite. But isn’t always easy finding their primary food source—krill—in the vast and dynamic waters of the ocean. How do these gentle giants find food and survive? The Blue Whale Observatory is a network of acoustic instruments in Monterey Bay that aims to answer this question. The observatory records whale calls, krill swarm activity, and ocean conditions for four months straight every summer and
