The covid-19 pandemic has created a poaching and illegal trade epidemic for Nepal’s endangered wildlife, including red pandas. Lockdowns in rural Nepal have had economic costs on already marginalized communities which have caused many people to resort to poaching to support themselves and their families. Pandemic-related lockdowns are also restricting the mobility of local forest officials and security forces and their ability to patrol the forests and enforce illegal trade laws. The situation i
